About Accelerated Reader:

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers to manage and monitor independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at their own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer – passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read.

Information on the interventions and provisions that the College provides

This is a programme that Cowley itself has designed to support students who have mastered their decoding skills and can read efficiently but need to develop their comprehension and understanding further.

This programme is intended for students to work in small groups to further develop their knowledge of the 7 reading skills:

  • Finding Information
  • Word Meaning
  • Inference
  • Symbolism
  • Identifying Methods
  • Effect
  • Supporting and interpretation / Opinion

Students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the texts that they are reading. This short 2-3 week programme has been proven to enhance a students word knowledge and application to everything they read.

Students at Cowley have their reading age periods checked and monitored. There should be a parity between and child’s chronological age and their reading age. If there is a gap of over 2 years we look to support this student through the Thinking Reading programme.

This is a 1:1 intervention programme that rapidly builds a students decoding skills. It is a rigidly designed systematic scheme that has proven to ensure a student makes accelerated progress in their reading. It has highly detailed assessments that track every aspect of the students performance.

For more information on the programme please take a look at the Thinking Reading programme website www.thinkingreading.com or follow their twitter account @ThinkReadHQ

At Cowley, we use a variety of strategies and resources to support the development of reading skills across the curriculum. With some of our Amber Readers, we use Rapid Plus. This is a highly effective and carefully sequenced set of resources, with the focus on rapidly improving readers’ comprehension and fluency. Identified students work in small groups guided by our Intervention Team each morning in the library. Students work through each Stage, developing comprehension and inference skills required for age-related progress in all subject areas.
