Every month, Cowley Sixth Form staff are asked to nominate students who have done well for our ‘Student of the Month’ awards.

This month, there were again plenty of nominations, making it an extremely difficult decision.

Our congratulations to the two worthy winners of this month’s awards:

Kiana, Year 12
Kiana is one of our nursing cadets and she has shown incredible resilience, self-motivation and initiative towards her studies despite some difficult circumstances. Her coursework is of an excellent standard and she always puts in 100%. Her placement feedback has also been exceptionally positive.

Jack, Year 13
Jack is consistent in his studies and always works at a very high standard. He is very conscientious in his studies and works extremely hard in study in his free periods, whatever the time of day.

Both are excellent role models and very deserving of this month’s prize! Congratulations to this month’s winners!

𝗪𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦!!!

We are thrilled to announce that we have been shortlisted for this year’s Educate Awards in THREE categories!

  • Most Inspirational Secondary School
  • Innovative & Creative Literacy Award
  • Outstanding Commitment to PE in Secondary School

Educate Awards have recently shared some of the reasons behind our shortlisting in each category on their social media channels.

We are extremely proud to be shortlisted for these awards and look forward to the awards ceremony which takes place at Liverpool Cathedral on Friday 18th November.

To mark Remembrance Day on Friday 11th November, the College will be holding a two-minute silence at the end of Period 2.

In addition, at 11:00am, Cadets, Ambassadors, Head Boys and Girls and deputies, Governors and staff will hold a two-minute silence and short service at the Cowley Memorial Wall.

Lest We Forget.

Every year, we offer Year 10 students a Careers Fair to get them thinking about their future opportunities and to show them, as much as possible, some of the opportunities they have after finishing school and college.

We had exhibitors come from around the country representing sixth form colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers to give our students exposure to the opportunities available to them.

This year, we had a drop-in session with all year groups invited to pop in during lunch time to have a look around and speak to the exhibitors, whilst parents and carers were also invited in after the college day and it was a very successful event.

We’d like to thank all the exhibitors for coming along and supporting our students.

Pupils’ passion for learning and their all-round happiness has seen Cowley retain its ‘good’ Ofsted rating.

Cowley International College is delighted to be recognised as a ‘good’ school following an Ofsted inspection.

The school and sixth form college recently welcomed inspectors inside for a routine visit for the first time since 2016.

Representatives from education watchdog Ofsted reported that pupils “described their school as a welcoming and friendly community where ‘people smile at one another’.”

They also noted that pupils behave well and that teachers are “ambitious for pupils”.

The glowing report highlights the well thought-out curriculum, as well as the enjoyment of learning and the determination of students to succeed.

Comments from inspectors included: “Leaders, including governors, ensure that pupils and students are at the centre of each decision that is made.”

The report spoke highly of the sixth form college, noting the range of appropriate courses and extensive array of enrichment activities available, stating “Staff expertise helps students to acquire a thorough insight and knowledge of the subjects that they study. As a result, students progress well.”

Cameron Sheeran, Executive Principal at Cowley said: “I am delighted with this Ofsted Inspection. Though only here for two days, the inspectors picked up on what makes Cowley unique: the happiness of students, their terrific attitude to learning and the dedication of staff, who place students at the heart of everything we do.”

Deborah Faulkner, Director of Cowley Sixth Form College said: “I am delighted that the sixth form has been recognised for its quality of education and extensive enrichment opportunities. The report highlights the support and guidance that sixth form students are given and this, in partnership with the opportunities available, leads to students feeling safe, happy and able to reach their full potential.”

Mental health and self-care have never been so important.  Here at Cowley Sixth Form College, there are numerous initiatives that we run to encourage Sixth Form students to reflect on their own mental health to help them deal with life’s many challenges.

Recently, a number of Cowley Sixth Form students worked in partnership with the Charlie Waller Trust to complete an 8-week course on Wellbeing and Positive Mental Health in order to be able to provide peer support to fellow students.

Part of the programme was an intensive 3-hour session where the ambassadors undertook the Youth Mental Health Aware course recognised by Mental Health England and presenting a wellbeing health campaign to the group on their chosen focus.

The students had to decide on a number of issues to focus on and they chose ‘Dealing with difficult news’, ‘Coping with social media stress’ and ‘Finding ways to boost your wellbeing’.  Marketing materials focusing on these areas were created to be used around the college to help provide information and to support students.

The group were very positive in their attitudes and mature in their approach with some very difficult subjects.

About the Charlie Waller Trust

The Charlie Waller Trust is one of the UK’s most respected mental health charities. The charity was founded in 1997 by the family of Charlie Waller who took his own life whilst suffering from depression. The charity helps young people to understand their own mental health, to equip them to support themselves and those around them, and to empower them to talk more openly about the subject.
