Cowley Sixth Form student stars in the West End

A Year 13 Performing Arts student at Cowley Sixth Form College has been treading the boards in the West End this summer with a leading role in ‘This Girl‘ – The Cynthia Lennon Story.

Dom, who will be collecting his results and leaving Cowley after two years in the sixth form, studied Professional Musical Theatre, Music Performance and Photography and played the role of Stuart Sutcliffe, John Lennon’s best friend, in the production that took place at the Gatehouse Theatre in London as part of the Camden Fringe Festival at the beginning of August.

‘This Girl’ tells the story of Cynthia Powell, a girl who fell in love with John Lennon when they met at Liverpool Art College in 1957, and is a musical about her largely untold story featuring original songs.

The role of Stuart Sutcliffe was both an acting and singing part. Dom responded to an open call on Facebook to audition for the role and says that both the students and staff at Cowley have helped him grow in confidence as he now looks to embark on a career within the Arts.

He said: “I have studied Professional Musical Theatre at Cowley Sixth Form College for the past two years and this is a course I am proud to have developed in as I am now able to share my newly found skills with the world, skills that I would have never looked upon if it wasn’t for this course. And this is purely because of the tutors and staff who pushed me to the limits, to the point where I knew I could exceed them.

“When I look back at my progress, I am humbled but yet filled with so much grief and sadness that I can’t do it all again, because an aspect of the musical theatre course at Cowley that doesn’t get spoken about is the atmosphere it brings, as when you study this course, you are not only a student, but you become a part of the family that is the Performing Arts department.

“I cannot thank the department enough for, not only building me up as an actor, but for making me see my future and striving towards it.

“The course gave me opportunities I am glad to have taken part in, from performing a hit musical in six weeks to hearing the choir echo in a church at Christmas time. It’s a course that really develops your potential.”

Everyone at Cowley is extremely proud of Dom for this fantastic achievement.
