spotlight on… health & social care

We take a closer look at Health & Social Care which is available for you to study here at Cowley Sixth Form.

We asked one of our current students, Carys, to give us a bit of insight into the course, what’s involved and what it’s like studying it here at Cowley Sixth Form College.

When did you first consider studying Health and Social Care at Sixth Form?

I first considered taking Health and Social at A-level after I attended the open evening for Cowley Sixth Form. I considered this option as beforehand I had studied this subject at GCSE and thoroughly enjoyed expanding on my knowledge of the subject.

What was it that captured your interest in the subject?

This subject attracted my attention as it has a wide variety of subjects which I enjoy learning more about. The subject also expands on my knowledge and help how I can put myself in to other individuals’ perspectives.

What has surprised you most about the subject?

The most surprising aspect is the speed in which we get through work. We get through work very fast and complete it to a high standard. This is surprising as you would think that the work which we do would take longer to complete.

What unit have you enjoyed studying the most? Explain why.

I have enjoyed studying unit 21 as it has expanded my knowledge of certain medical conditions. It has also explained how nutrition and overnutrition can cause health problems.

If you are struggling with a question/topic what support is available?

If I struggle completing any work, there is a huge amount of support available. I have three teachers that I could go to for help such as Mrs Tillett, Miss Mather or Miss Laurie. I also could go to Mrs Robinson if no other teacher was available. If I felt uncomfortable speaking to any of the teachers above, I could also go to Jo (Sixth Form Study Supervisor) who would email my teachers for help and guidance about the work.

What do you enjoy most about the lessons?

I enjoy the atmosphere and the work the most. I enjoy this the most as my teachers are very friendly and helpful within each lesson. They are also understanding and create a good environment which means that I can complete my work to a high standard. I enjoy doing the work as I find the subjects interesting and it is fascinating to learn more each lesson.

What have you found the most challenging?

The most challenging aspect, in my opinion, would be the work placement. However, once you have done it once, then you will be experienced and it will get easier each time you do it.

What advice would you give someone thinking of taking the subject at Cowley Sixth Form College?

I would recommend that you should only pick this subject if you are interested in this subject. I think this because if you are not interested, then it would be likely that you would dislike this subject as you will have many hours practically doing it each week.

If you had to pick your subjects again, would you still pick Health and Social Care? If yes, why? If no, why not?

If I had to pick my subjects again, I would without a doubt choose this subject again. I would choose this subject again as it would help me in my future career. I would also choose this subject as it is my favourite one and is extremely enjoyable and interesting. I also would pick it again as my teachers are amazing and are always available to help me.
