Here, we take a closer look at our new and popular Creative Digital Media: Film & Video BTEC Level 3 course which is available for you to study here at Cowley Sixth Form.
We have fantastic facilities here at Cowley Sixth Form, and since it’s introduction to our course list last year, it has proved incredibly popular.
We asked one of our current students, Dylan, to give us a bit of insight into the course, what’s involved and what it’s like studying here at Cowley Sixth Form College.
When did you first consider studying Creative Media at sixth form?
When I first was coming to college, it was the first subject I wanted to follow as we didn’t do much in media from time to time in my old school, the equipment was very poor and finding inspiration was hard. I wanted to continue as I wanted to further understand more about media with the better equipment and facilities on offer at Cowley.
What was it that captured your interest in the subject?
The fact that you can tell a story through a camera and the colours and creativity you can have and do with a camera and media is amazing to me. I also want to be a content creator and so I want to understand how you can represent a product through the camera and attaching music and so much more to get the point across in a professional and entertaining way and make it interesting. I love how amazing you can make something look through media and want to understand more about advertising and understanding what message they are trying to get across and see whether they do meet their purpose.
What has surprised you most about the subject?
Just the endless amount of ways you can film something and do things and what certain objects and camera movement can represent. Learning about all that just amazes me and wows me and how everything is done to make them things happen.
What topics are you working on at the moment?
Creating digital storyboards and using a single camera to film a short drama.
If you are struggling with a question/topic what support is available?
Teachers are readily available to speak to, either in person or via email, and the internet is a big help along with power-points we have to refer back to which are uploaded to Teams.
What do you enjoy most about the lessons?
How fun it is, it is an interesting and exciting subject to study and I look forward to all the lessons.
What have you found the most challenging?
The research and planning can be challenging but it is all worth it when you get to start your project and then see the final result.
What advice would you give someone thinking of taking the subject at Cowley Sixth Form College?
Go with what you love doing outside of school, there is a great variety within this subject which means you can do a lot of different things.
If you had to pick your subjects again, would you still pick Creative Media? If yes, why? If no, why not?
Yes, because the subject really interests me and it will help me with what I want to achieve in the future.
