spotlight on… business

We take a closer look at the Business course offered at Cowley Sixth Form.

You may not have studied Business before, so we asked one of our students to give us a bit more insight into the course, what’s involved and what it’s like studying it here at Cowley.

  1. When did you first consider studying Business at Sixth Form?
I think it was about halfway through Year 11 at a Parents’ Evening. I saw Mrs Faulkner (Director of Sixth Form and Business teacher) who told me about the BTEC Business course and the prospects that would arise from it. Then, at a Sixth Form open evening, it was explained to me in more detail and I knew then that I wanted to study Business in Year 12 and 13.
  2. What was it that captured your interest in the subject?
I really liked that there was both coursework AND examination involved because it would truly stretch my capabilities in both areas. Also, I think that learning about Personal Finance attracted me to the course because I wanted to have control over my finances and know how to manage my money later on in life.
  3. What has surprised you the most about the subject?
The thing that has surprised me the most about Business, and particularly Personal Finance, is just how relevant it is to life for a college student after they’ve left and either got a job or gone to university. I think it’s important that every student has a chance to learn more in-depth about how to manage their finances after they leave college.
  4. Personal and Business Finance is a large examined unit: what’s the mathematical content like?
The maths involved in Personal and Business Finance is quite challenging at first, but once you know the formulas off by heart, you make it easier for yourself. The maths is also relevant to life, which is partly why I chose to study Business as a subject.
  5. If you are struggling with a question/topic, what support is available?
If I am struggling with something, I can always email my teachers. They’re on hand whenever they can be to help out if you’re struggling, which is very reassuring to know in any subject.
  6. What do you enjoy most about the lessons?
In Business lessons, I just love the interaction we have as a class: everything from discussions on certain topics to just helping each other understand different aspects of the course better. In no way is it just a lesson where we all just sit quietly and don’t ask questions, everyone has questions and it’s important to ask them. If Socrates or Einstein didn’t ask any questions, where would we be now?
  7. What have you found the most challenging?
I think coming into a course that I haven’t experienced anything like before was challenging at first, and remembering the formulas for Business Finance was tricky as well. Sometimes I would get certain formulas mixed up and have to go away and learn them, but I’m pretty secure with all of them now. In terms of coursework, it’s just knowing how much to write: where to stop. When you have so much to say about something, it’s difficult to know when you’re waffling!
  8. What advice would you give someone thinking of taking the subject at Cowley Sixth Form College?
To anyone thinking of studying Business, I would say to do it but also be prepared to be challenged in this subject. It can be quite challenging in many ways, but I think that just helps you to become a better student and improves your knowledge and skills.
  9. If you had to pick your subjects again, would you still pick Business?
I would definitely choose Business again if I had to pick my subjects again because, like I said before, it’s just so relevant to life after college. As well as that, I think it’s just a very interesting and challenging subject which I have thoroughly enjoyed studying so far.
