Travel and Tourism
COURSE DESCRIPTION - General overview of course
The course concentrates on a range of aspects relating to the travel and tourism industry, including investigating travel destinations,
dealing with customers, impacts of tourism, marketing, and working in travel and tourism. For the the first time from 2005 onwards students
do not have to commit themselves to two years of study, as was the case with Travel and Tourism courses in previous years. Where ever possible
students will be given first hand practical experience of the theory. This will involve trips to airports, special interest holiday destinations
and implementing personal projects.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL INVOLVE :
AS Level SINGLE involves the candidates completing 3 AS units = 1 AS level.
A2 Level SINGLE involves the candidates completing 3 AS units and 3 A2 units – 1 A2 level.
Units include: Customer care, Travel Destinations, Planning a tourism event, current issues and employment in the industry.

REQUIREMENTS : (skills/knowledge/qualifications you will need to have to follow the course)
To enter on to an advanced Travel and Tourism course you will need a minimum of four grade Cs or higher in a range of GCSEs. Candidates should have the
ability to work to deadlines and must be capable of working independently. The course has a strong emphasis on coursework; students should therefore be comfortable
using word and the Internet for extra research. Successful students will be punctual and attend all lessons ensuring a purposeful and productive attitude at all times.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE you will develop on the course
You will develop a sound understanding of the travel and tourism in the UK; along with a range of destinations, both long and short haul.
An awareness of the careers available in the industry is also developed, making the course extremely relevant to anyone who is thinking of
pursuing a career in this area. Through extensive use of computers your ICT skills will be further developed, along with your ability to research
a topic independently, a skill necessary for any students thinking of going to university.

FORM OF ASSESSMENT/EXAMINATION
The travel and tourism course is assessed two-thirds coursework and one third externally assessment. This means for those students doing the single
award two units are externally assessed and four for dual award candidates. The external assessment takes the form of a controlled conditions exam.
Students are prepared for the assessment by producing a folder of work/evidence this is then taken into the controlled conditions. Students may use
the material they have produced to help them answer the questions. The assessment lasts for ten hours, this is usually spread out over a one or two week period.

PROGRESSION – What the course can lead to
Succes in AVCE travel and tourism can lead to one of the many careers in the industry such as a travel agent, resort representative or cabin crew. It may also
lead to further study at a variety of universities such as Edgehill, Liverpool John Moores and Manchester. These institutes have a wide range of tourism related
courses for students to choose from.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
The travel and tourism course can be used to be compliment other subjects such as Business Studies, Geography etc. The course is based on coursework
therefore students can work at their own pace. Furthermore the course has achieved excellent results.
