Information Communication Technology

COURSE DESCRIPTION - General overview of course
The course for AS comprised of the 3 units of work – ICT IN SOCIETY, ICT AND ORGANISATIONS, DATA HANDLING and is completed within the first year.

The course for full Advanced Level award has a further 3 units to be completed in the second or A2 year. In this year there is an element of choice.

Students are also able to complete a Dual Award Advanced qualification over the 2 years be completing a total of 12 units. Again there is an element of choice. This qualification is achieved by choosing ICT in 2 of the available option blocks.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL INVOLVE:
The AS course in the first year is comprised of the 3 units of work previously listed. In the summer of the first year pupils are then able to make the decision as to whether to continue to gain the full Advanced qualification. As part of the AS course pupils are also awarded ICT key skills at level 3 to provide extra UCAS points.

The course for full Advanced level award has a further 3 units to be completed in the second or A2 year. The units are PROJECT MANAGEMENT, ADVANCED SPREADSHEET DESIGN and PUBLISHING.

Students choosing to study 12 units and qualify for the Dual Advanced ICT award are required to complete the units required at A level plus 6 others over 2 years. Students failing to complete all units may however still be eligible for the single advanced award.

REQUIREMENTS: (skills/knowledge/qualifications you will need to have to follow the course)
GNVQ ICT AT MERIT LEVEL OR ABOVE and an interest in ICT.

Ability to attend lessons regularly and meet deadlines however is an essential requirement.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE you will develop on the course
General ICT skills based around the use of MS Office. Specific ICT skills will depend upon the types of optional units chosen.

FORM OF ASSESSMENT/EXAMINATION
All of the units are 100% coursework based.

Some work is based on pre-release material and is completed under controlled conditions.

No extra work is required for Key Skills ICT qualification. This is awarded at Level 3 automatically as part of the AS qualification.

PROGRESSION - What the course can lead to

- A range of higher educational courses may be taken according to interests developed during the course. Many joint qualifications are now available combining ICT with other subjects.

- Many jobs are now ICT related including: Publishing, Telecommunications, Internet Services, Web Page Design, Networking, Business Administration, Games, Design, Teaching.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
The ICT course:

- Can be used to compliment other subjects.

- Is project based with students working at their own pace. Lessons often involve students studying independently and requesting help when appropriate.

- Has achieved excellent results over previous years with 95% pass rate and over 50% of students achieving grade A.
