Sixth Form : Vocational

Diploma in Childcare and Education

COURSE DESCRIPTION - General overview of course
This one-year course, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels. It carries 240 university points, which guarantees entry onto relevant courses.

This course is ideal for those interested in working with children. It qualifies you to go directly into employment in a supervisory role.

You will be expected to carry out half of the course at a work placement.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL INVOLVE
You will have to complete 12 units over two years. One large unit will be practically assessed whilst on placement. You will be on placement for 12 hours a week.

- Work with young children

- Foundations to caring

- The developing child

- Health and community care

- Play, curriculum and early learning

- Work with babies in the first year of life

- Preparation for employment

- The provision of services and the protection of children

- Anti-discriminatory/anti-bias practice

REQUIREMENTS (skills/knowledge/qualifications you will need to follow the course)
Students must have an interest and a desire to work with children.

Students should have a basic literacy and numeracy skills and have either; at least four GCSE passes at grade C or above.

Regular and punctual attendance, as well as the ability to meet agreed deadlines.

- Full preparation for employment directly after leaving school

- Skills to communicate and understand children

- Knowledge of how children develop

- Knowledge of activities that will meet children’s needs

- Skills to communicate with parents.

FORM OF ASSESSMENT/EXAMINATION
Unit 12 is practically assessed on placement.

All other units are assessed on the quality of an assignment.

There is one external examination that cover topics in all units.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
As the course is worth three A Levels students do not have to take any other subjects. However popular and successful combinations of subjects with the Diploma have proven to be Health and Social Care and ICT.
