Sixth Form : IB
The International Baccalaureate | The IB Diploma | Assessment and Grading | University Recognition | IB Handout
Introduction
The International Baccalaureate is an exciting qualification and offers a well respected alternative to A levels.
It allows students to study a much wider range of subjects post 16, thereby keeping more of their options open in
terms of higher education courses and employment possibilities.
The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification which emphasises the concept of a global society.
Cowley students will be encouraged to make contact with students in other countries through the 'IB Link' and
see the whole world as a future education and employment opportunity.
This qualification offers an excellent progression route to British Universities and in fact gives IB students an advantage:-
• IB Students, on average, stand a better chance of receiving a university offer.
• IB Students, on average, stand a better chance of gaining a higher level of degree.
If you want something that can set you apart from the crowd, then the IB Diploma may well be the answer.
For the more adventurous students, the IB Diploma is very highly regarded by universities in the USA. The
universities of California, Florida, New York and Texas all actively try to recruit IB Students. Harvard
University took 11% of its students from abroad and of these 38% had the IB qualification. At Berkley 50% of
the intake from outside the USA studied IB. In many of the American universities the IB is seen as the 'Gold
Standard' and students with sufficient points can go directly into the second year.
