About the Role

Lancashire County Council is pleased to offer Apprentice Highways opportunities that are now open for applications. These two- or four-year training opportunities are based in various locations across Lancashire within the Highways Service. As a Lancashire County Council apprentice, you will be fully supported with specialist training, internal work rotation and a full mentor support system to ensure you get the best out of the apprenticeship.

Key Accountabilities

As an Apprentice Highways Operative, you can expect to get involved in a variety of duties such as general highway maintenance operations and scheme delivery. This can include laying of kerbs, installation of drainage, patching or pothole repairs using hand operated powered tools and traffic management equipment.

As an Apprentice Electrician, you can expect to get involved in installing electrical wiring systems in a variety of apparatus but predominately in street lighting systems. You will also work at heights and in trenches as required.

Skills and Experience

Applicants should have a good school, college, or work record in terms of time keeping, conduct and punctuality and a positive attitude towards training.

Candidates should also have an interest in working in the civil engineering/highways industry.

Training

Apprentice Highway Operatives will work towards a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Operative apprenticeship with SB Skills Ltd based at Skelmersdale in blocks of 4 days each month over 2 years. This course will start on 1st August 2022.

Apprentice Electricians will work towards a Level 3 Installation Electrician apprenticeship standard with Burnley or Lancaster College over 4 years. This course will start on 1st September 2022.

Other

Apprentice Highway Operatives will be placed on a rotation programme during the apprenticeship which will ensure a comprehensive experience of all aspects of highway service delivery. This will include working at several locations across Lancashire from one of bases listed below, please state your location preference in your application form.

Recruitment and Interview

Apprentice Highway Operative applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to a 2-day recruitment event on 18th and 19th July. This event is from 8:30 to 4pm on both days and will be held at SB Skills training facility at 4 Selby Place, Skelmersdale WN8 8EF. This will be an opportunity to experience real highway works, to understand teamwork and problem solving through a number of task based and classroom activities. Interviews for the apprentice post will be held on the afternoon of 19th July.

Apprentice Electricians will be required to attend an interview only which will be held during the week commencing 25th July.
