key information regarding the return to college in January

Dear Parent/Carer,

This week is our final week of the term and students will finish at 1pm Friday 17th December.   On Friday, students will have standard lessons Period 1, 2 and 3 followed by an extended break and reward assemblies.  School buses will not be available at 1pm and alternative transport should be arranged where possible. If your child needs to remain in school until 3:05pm to use the school bus service please contact the school so supervision arrangements can be made.

Returning in January

The term starts Tuesday 4th January and schools have been asked to COVID test all students on arrival (similar to September).  The testing will protect the Cowley community and help stop the spread of the virus.  This testing does not replace the twice weekly Home testing that should take place every Sunday and Wednesday, (including over the Christmas period).

Questions about January:

What if my child is in Y7-10 on the ‘vulnerable list’?

Parents and carers will be contacted directly next week by the college.  It is the expectation that all students on our vulnerable list attend school from Tuesday morning 8:30am.  They will attend lessons as normal after testing.

What if I am a key worker and my child cannot work at home?

Please request a place from the college by Wednesday 15th December by emailing kwb@cowleysthelens.org.uk

Your child will attend school from Tuesday morning 8:30am.  They will attend lessons as normal after testing.

What work will be set for Y7-10 students on Tuesday/Wednesday?

It is important that learning continues for those students working at home.  Students are experienced at using the MS Teams platform.  All staff will set MS Teams ‘assignments’ for students to complete during their designated lesson time.  Please support your child to be organised and disciplined with the learning.

What if my child does not have access to MS Teams?

We have been using MS Teams for a while now and it is important that students check their access today.  If your child does not have access to IT facilities, then please let the year team know and the college will provide paper copies of work to be completed.  If these paper copies are requested, they will be distributed to students Friday 17th December.

Should I continue to have Home COVID tests over the Christmas break?

Yes, please continue to supervise your child to test every Sunday and Wednesday (including the day before they return to college). It is important that we identify any positive cases before students return to school.

What kind of COVID testing will be done at College?

All students will take the standard Lateral Flow test.  There may also be an option for a sample of students to have a PCR test as well.  We are awaiting confirmation from a PCR testing team.

What happens if my child tests positive on their first day in January?

Any students who test positive will be isolated and parents will be informed to collect them and take for a PCR test.

What happens if my child or family tests positive over the Christmas holidays?

Please follow all the guidelines and inform the college, enquiries@cowleysthelens.org.uk

What happens on the first day if my child does not have consent for COVID testing?

The COVID testing has helped with protecting the Cowley community and we encourage all families to use this opportunity.  You can contact the college and request to give consent.  Students without consent will arrive to college at the same time as other students but will not take a test.

Will face coverings be required after Christmas?

We are awaiting further guidance from DfE.  However, it is common sense to have two face coverings with us at all times.

What if things change over the Christmas holidays?

Senior Staff will be in communication with Department for Education, Local Authority and Public Health England throughout the holiday and will communicate any changes to parents/carers.  Please check the college website and emails to keep fully informed.

Please contact the college if there is anything we can do to support your family.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and wish you a Happy Christmas.

Best wishes,

Mr Cormack
