Remembrance Day

On the 11th November, we remember the brave soldiers who fought for their country.

The College will hold a Remembrance assembly at Cowley Sixth Form for Year 12 and Year 13 students that includes reading of poems, an explanation of the poems, a 2 minutes silence for reflection and to show respect, and a few words from History teacher, Mr Edwards about Christmas Day on the battlefield in 1914 .

Mrs Bellis, Chair of Governors, will also attend the assembly to lay a wreath before a plaque that commemorates the lives of former students lost in the war.

A Year 7 assembly will also take place on the high school site.

Battlefields Trip

edwards

On Sunday 13th November, Mr Edwards, History teacher and two Cowley students will visit Flanders field in Belgium as part of a four-day educational tour.

The visit will allow students to learn at first-hand about the sacrifices made by the troops and the personal stories of those involved in the war effort.

On return, Mr Edwards and the students involved in the visit will lead assemblies for all year groups to discuss the tour and to talk about the historical importance of the sites visited and to reflect on how our present day is shaped by the past.

Mr Edwards, History teacher at Cowley:

It is 100 years since the terrible Battle of the Somme. This was such a waste of British soldiers lives and deserves to be commemorated by our school.

Caitlin, Year 12 student:

[Reflecting why she wanted to be part of the educational trip]

To pay respects, in person, to my great uncle who died on the battlefields and later received the Inter-allied victory medal.

Lydia, Year 10 student:

[also reflecting why she wanted to be part of the educational trip]

I am very interested in History and in learning about how war has affected lives both then and now. The assemblies after the trip will help me to boost my confidence.
