Taking good notes plays an important to academic success. The following are three reasons as to why good note taking matters:

1. Prevents forgetting: Our memory fades quickly. Research shows that we forget 50% of what we hear within an hour and more than 70% within two days.

2. Encourages concentration: Taking effective notes requires a student to be mentally active during a class or while reading. One has to pay attention, interact with information, make decisions about what to record, and write. Given that the mind is occupied with a demanding task, there is less opportunity for the mind to wander.

3. Records testable material: . Tests/exams are based on key ideas teachers emphasize in their classes and/or written material that supports key concepts or themes. In other words, the testable material.

Flash Cards

Create a set of flash cards that cover a key topic or area.

Your teachers can give you card or paper to help you make the cards.

Once you have made the cards categorise them into 3 boxes: the ones you are confident with, those you are unsure about, and those you do not know at all.

Use the cards regularly to help you remember the key information.

The key to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Leitner system is that the cards in the lower boxes–the ones you know less well–are reviewed more frequently than the cards in the higher boxes. For example, the cards in Box 1 might be reviewed 3 times as often as those in Box 3. It’s up to you to choose the frequency of review for each box. Here are some example review times for a four-box set up:
