Curriculum in detail – a great resource for parents!

Take a look at each subject that Cowley offers and read about that subject’s curriculum aim, curriculum structure, and take a look at what is taught and when.

The Curriculum at Cowley (2020 – 2021)

Cowley International College divides its curriculum into 3 Key Stages, in line with Department of Education guidance and the National Curriculum for Schools.

Key Stage 3 – Years 7, 8 and 9

Throughout Key Stage 3, all students are required to study a broad range of subjects, namely English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, MFL, Religious Studies, Personal and Social Education, Computing, Technology, Art, Music, PE and Games.

For some subjects, there is an element of choice: for instance, all schools are required to teach a Modern Foreign Language to all Key Stage 3 students, but it is up to individual schools to decide which language(s) they wish to teach. At Cowley, students will either be taught German or French, whilst some students will be given the option to study an additional language, namely Mandarin Chinese.

Key Stage 4 – Years 10 and 11

Students continue to follow a core curriculum in Years 10 and 11, which includes English, Mathematics, Science, History or Geography, Religious Studies, Personal and Social Education, Computing, PE and Games. In addition, however, students are able to decide which additional option subjects they would like to study throughout Key Stage 4. This might include subjects that they have already studied at Key Stage 3 (such as Art) or include subjects which they have never studied before (such as Business Studies). All examinations take place at the end of Year 11.

Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13

Cowley Sixth Form is open to students from a range of institutions: in recent years, students have come from Cowley, Haydock, St Cuthbert’s, De la Salle and Rainford. Every year, however, we get students who come from much further afield, such as schools in Liverpool and Wigan.

Students in the Cowley Sixth Form usually study three subjects, but it is not uncommon for students to study four (or even five in very rare circumstances). These can be all A Levels, all BTECs, or a mixture of the two. We also have an increasing proportion of our students who follow work-related programmes (such as our Nurse Cadethip programme), which include a long term work placement as part of their studies (usually two days a week).
