Letter to parents | Lateral Flow Testing at College

25th February 2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are so pleased that the college is opening for the students from 8th March.

I hope you are finding the information on the ‘Return to College Hub’ useful for your preparation; this will be updated each day with additional information.

Lateral Flow Testing at College

The government requires schools and colleges to run testing of students on their return to college and regular tests following this. This is quite a challenge for a college as large as Cowley. Where schools and colleges have large numbers of students, government guidance allows a phased return to college from Monday 8th March. To speed up this process, Y11 students are required to come for their first test on Sunday 7th March. More information about the testing appointment and phased return will be sent out shortly with details discussed during your KIT day appointment on Tuesday 2nd March.

In the meantime, please complete the parental consent form for each child that attends Cowley by following this link Covid Consent Forms by Monday 1st March. Parental consent must be in place for the testing to take place. Up to one third of people who have coronavirus are asymptomatic. By testing we will help to reduce the spread in college through asymptomatic transmission. I am therefore strongly encouraging all parents to consent.

What if my child tests positive?
If a pupil tests positive on a lateral flow device, they will need to self-isolate for 10 days and follow the guidance from NHS Test and Trace.

What happens if the test is negative?
While a small number of pupils may need to repeat the test if the first test was invalid or void for some reason, pupils who test negative will be able to stay in Cowley and resume their activities as normal. Pupils will be informed of negative test results via text/email. Where participants are under 16, parents or legal guardians will also be informed.

What if staff or students have been in close contact with someone in Cowley who tests positive?
The staff member or student will be notified that they are a close contact by the Cowley and will need to self-isolate for 10 days in line with Government guidance.

What if my child develops symptoms?
This testing programme at Cowley International College is for people with no symptoms. If your child develops symptoms at any time (including a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste) they must immediately self-isolate and book a test by calling 119 or visiting www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test.

We will support our staff and pupils throughout, but please contact us if you have any questions. You can contact the office by telephone 01744 678030.

Kind regards,

Mr Cormack
