19 August 2021
We hope you and your family are well and are managing to enjoy the summer. We have less than three weeks until students return. In this letter, there is some important information to ensure all students have a
good start to the new College year. There is further information, updates and presentations found on our College website.
Congratulations to the Y11 and Y13 students with their results. It has certainly been a difficult two years preparing for the assessments; however, the hard work and dedication has paid off and we are proud of their achievements. We thank parents and staff for their care and commitment to the students while we navigated our way through the process of gathering evidence and preparing students for their assessments.
The vast majority of new Year 7 students attended the Summer School last week. It was a wonderful week and has supported the students with their transition to high school. It is fantastic to see them making new
friends and immersing themselves in Cowley life.
COVID preparations for September
We are continuing to follow DfE guidance to ensure students, families and staff are safe. Government guidance is being updated regularly and we are responding quickly to any changes. We will be testing all students on their first day in College and again a few days later. Please continue to test at home and inform the college of any positive cases.
The year teams have a key part to play in students’ life at Cowley. Next year the year teams are:
|Y7||Mrs Green, Mr Collins & Mr Hewlett|
|Y8||Mrs Mason, Miss Marnell & Mr Hewlett|
|Y9||Mrs Moore, Miss Mather & Miss Dyer|
|Y10||Mrs Winders, Miss Mather & Mr Middleton|
|Y11||Miss Lamping, Miss Mather & Mrs Chadwick|
|Y12 & Y13||Miss Corbett & Mr Dunford|
First day back
The DfE has recommended that schools have a staggered start for students in September. This will ensure a safe return and testing can take place and students can learn the new routines. It will also help those Year 7 students who missed out on their induction in July. Students should arrive in full uniform on their allocated first day.
|Year Group||First Day|
|Y7||Friday 3rd September|
|Y8||Wednesday 8th September|
|Y9||Tuesday 7th September|
|Y10||Wednesday 8th September|
|Y11||Monday 6th September|
|Y12||Monday 6th September|
|Y13||COVID testing Monday 6th (pm). First day Tuesday 7th September|
Reading, Reading and Reading
There is a direct link between reading levels and success at school. The students who read often are more likely to do well in their exams. We want your children to be successful and we want them to love reading. Over the remainder of the summer holidays please continue to have time every day where your child is reading. If you would like any reading books for your child, then please contact the college.
Being prepared for September
We continue to have high standards and expectations for uniform and equipment. Please check our uniform policy so there are no shocks on the first day. If your child has enjoyed the ‘freedom’ of the summer with hair colour, piercings, nail varnish, false nails and eye lashes etc., then please ensure these are all sorted, and your child is ‘Cowley ready’ for their first day. Your child will also need a suitable school bag with all the required equipment for every college day. Please continue to check blazer pockets and bags each night and morning, to see if they have all the equipment they need to support their learning.
There has been a great deal of media coverage about whether mobile phones should be allowed in schools. Cowley’s expectations and rules will remain the same as previous years, and the overwhelming majority of students manage to follow these expectations, so their phones are not a distraction to their learning. Phones should not be seen or heard inside the building. Phones should be turned off and in school bags while
students are inside the building. Students may check and use their phone at break and lunch on the playground. If a phone is heard or seen, then the phone will be confiscated, and the student will be choosing a 30 minute after College detention.
It is becoming more common for people to have EarPods or headphones. The same expectations for EarPods/headphones is the same as it is for mobile phones. However, we recommend that students do not use these while travelling to college, so they can hear the traffic.
We will be using Class Charts from September for attendance, rewards and behaviour. Please ensure you have your logon details and the app so you can see ‘live’ information about how your child is performing each
day. Log on information will be sent to you separately.
Extracurricular clubs and activities
We are looking forward to offering the amazing full Cowley extracurricular timetable this year, with clubs, sports, performing arts and trips. We encourage all students get involved in as many extracurricular activities as possible and immerse themselves into Cowley life. More information will be shared to students in September about these activities.
Keeping in contact
Communication with parents and carers is so important and we will use different methods to communicate. Please ensure we have up to date mobile numbers and email addresses. Please contact the offices if and
when there are changes. We are confident that this year is going to be a great year and it is wonderful seeing the enthusiasm, optimism and excitement from the new Year 7s at Summer school. If the students work hard, demonstrate the Cowleian Characteristics and read each day, we guarantee your child will be successful. As always if there is anything we can do to support you, or your family then please do get in touch with the
college – the office is open every day during the summer holiday.
