Cowley wins Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Bronze Award

Cowley International College is delighted to have been recognised by the Woodland Trust with a bronze award for its eco-friendly work in the environment.

The College has won The Green Tree Schools Bronze Award for taking part in a host of green projects which are helping our environment and improving the College’s sustainability.

Cowley has an Eco-Committee consisting of students right the way through from Year 7 to Year 13, who volunteer their time to work on environmental issues in and around the College.

To achieve this award, the Eco-Committee had to demonstrate the importance of trees in the College environment, create tree mascots as well as demonstrate the green activities which take place at Cowley, such as recycling, waste minimalisation and energy conservation.

Miss Petterson, Sustainability Coordinator at Cowley, said: “We are extremely proud of this award.

“The students care deeply about the environment and have worked hard to improve areas around the College, so it is nice to have that recognised by The Woodland Trust.”

Since it was launched in 2008, more than 13,000 schools around the UK have signed up to The Green Tree Schools initiative in a scheme which brings the great outdoors into the classroom.

The Green Tree Schools Award is free for schools to take part in, and the Woodland Trust also offers free packs of trees to schools for them to plant.

The Woodland Trust charity is seeking help from schools and communities alike in helping to protect and restore ancient woodland in the UK so it can be cherished by future generations.

In further Eco news, our entry into the recent Unifrog ‘Save The Planet’ competition has been rewarded with a prize!

The competition had entries from across four continents, looking at ways that schools can protect the planet.

Cowley’s entry, details of a food waste project being worked on by the Eco-Committee, picked up a runners up prize with 25 trees to be planted in the College’s name by Mossy Earth.
