Cambridge University visit Cowley to meet Year 11 high achievers

On Thursday, 7th February, a selection of high achieving Year 11 students from Cowley International College, Haydock High School and Rainford High School visited Cowley Sixth Form College to attend an information event aimed at encouraging students to apply to some of the best universities in the country.

The inspirational and informative session was run by Sandy Mill, the Schools Liaison Officer for Magdalene College at Cambridge University.   Sandy spoke about the benefits of attending university and the opportunities that attending a Russell Group university, such at Cambridge, could present.

Sandy talked at length about the common stereotype’s that people associate with those who study at top universities, such being affluent or that they will have attended a private school.

However, Sandy dispelled these myths and focused on the factors that really matter to attend a top university: having a passion for your chosen subject(s) and the grades to support your application.

More than 21,500 students from all walks of life and all corners of the world attend Cambridge University and they all share this common interest: a thirst for learning and knowledge.

Many students who attended asked questions at the end of the motivational session and were keen to know more.

Thank you to Sandy for visiting Cowley and providing such an informative session.  Thanks also go to Cowley’s Most Able Coordinator, Mrs Hewlett, for organising.
